Mumbai as said is the city of dreams, and one of its junction, Matunga is the place where many traditions reside. A person who travels daily in Mumbai's local trains would never ever dare to travel without a ticket to Matunga. Once again, if you know, you know. Matunga has a history of being one of the seven original islands of Mumbai. As most of the South Indians reside here, it make Matunga very famous for its South Indian cuisine. The traditions like eating and serving food on a banana leaf and eating a banana after a meal is still followed in some of the restaurants here. These restaurants are famous for serving you their cuisine with the same South Indian purity and authenticity.
1. Hotel Ram Ashraya
Making way for a healthy meal, this restaurant in Matunga was established in the year 1939. This place is synonymous with delicious food that can satiate all food cravings. Butter Idli with Sambar podi served here is famous all over Mumbai. It has an authentic taste of the Malga podi which hits you right in your taste buds and makes you go crazy for its texture. This restaurant serves breakfast dishes and people start coming here by 7 am everyday. Pineapple sheera is the most liked dessert here by the customers. Just like any other South Indian restaurant, 'Filter Kaapi' is juggled and served.


2. Shree Krishna
Situated in the east of Matunga, this place serves in Thali system. The unlimited thali system is just like cherry on the cake. The Thali consists of Oosme, Puri/Roti, rice, Bendakaya Pulusu Sambhar, Kollu Rasam, Avial, Thoran, Olan, Papad, 3 pickles and payasam ( sweet dish). This restaurant serves its thali on a Banana leaf, maintaining the authenticity of their cuisine.

3. Sharda Bhavan
This is one of the oldest restaurants of Matunga. This place is famous for its special Mangalorian savoury, 'Neer dosa'. This dosa is served mainly served with chicken or mutton curries or Sambhar. Mangalorian Sambhar is something to die for. Other delicacies of Kerala like Appam, kadala curry is served here too. It's also famous for Idli and medu vadai and daal vada.

4. Mani's Lunch Home
This place has been spreading its territory all over Mumbai since the year 1937. Sambhar rice and Bisibele rice are the two most loved dishes for lunch. 5. Madras Cafe
This place is majorly known for the food of Tamil Nadu. Having a table sharing system, this place will give you friends for free. The ambience itself if filled with the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans which would give you a sudden urge of drinking 'Filter Kaapi' here. Pessarettu, Tuppa dosa and Rasam Vada are the specialities of this place.
