|By- Ayushi Maharshi|
Generation gap looks so simple as a word but it can actually destroy life of parents & children so badly. Today we are living in a modern world, but still we can see the problem like generation gap very clearly, especially in rural areas. These areas become the home of crime because of the lack of conversation between parents & children.
The generation gap is the difference of outlook, opinions, beliefs, skills, attitudes, and behaviors among the older generations and the younger generations. In short, the generation gap is the age gap between each generation. While the generation gap has been prevalent throughout all periods of history, it has only grown in recent years. Main reasons behind generation gap are:
1. Different opinion of their ideas
2. Technology changes:
· Newspaper to social media
· Paper work to computer work
3. Traditional values
· Dressing sense
· Respect
· Etiquettes
How Generation Gap Affects The Life of Children?
Wrong accompaniment: Teenage and adolescent phase of life can easily manipulate a child. This the age where he/she can decide that whose company is good for his/her and on which path they wants go on. And it’s totally depended on how a parent treat their child & parent’s support plays a big role in their life.
Wrong decision: Because of generation gap children take so many bad decisions & for which they have to regret life time. Because according to them parents can’t understand their situation. Which are wrong parents being more experienced they always gives best advice to their children. But then somehow these decisions sometimes can spoil their entire life.
How Generation Gap Can Affect The Life of Parents?
Demotivation: As I have mentioned that we are living in a modern world where technology has become an important part of our lives & our parents are not very familiar with it. That’s why they face trouble while using new gadgets. When children tell their parents that “This is not your cup of tea”, it really hurts.

How to Bridge The Generation Gap Between Parents & Their Children?
Both parents & children are responsible so the solution needs to be found on both ends.
Keep an open mind: The way that kids think is different from how parents do. Parents often feel protective because they have already been through the age their child is currently in. The truth is, the world and way of life was different then than it is now and their kid’s mind-set will be very different and can also be shocking at times for some parents. This is why keeping an open mind and not assuming that they must be just like you were at their age is very important. You must also understand that acceptance is the key to a healthy relationship. You can be the support system for your children that may not have received when you were the same age.
Communication: Making the time to communicate with your kids every day is very important. The simple act of talking at the end of the day can help you get to know each other and make it easier to speak freely around the other. Children need to know they can approach their parents with anything, something that can ultimately give parents peace of mind since they do not need to worry about their children hiding things that are important. Do not judge your children, that will give them the confidence to start a communication.
Listen: Parents need to allow their kids time to talk and listen to what they have to say. Learning your child’s thoughts and opinions makes them feel important which in turn makes them feel much closer to you than before. Having a parent who listens instead of only lecturing or suggesting how to live life always will give your child encouragement to listen to you in return.
Understand: With listening comes understanding and this means that you have to learn to put yourself in your child’s shoes and trying to understand how they feel and what they want from what they tell you. If you are able to understand where your child is coming from, you will be able to close that generation gap to some extent. Even if you don’t understand them, you can try to be supportive by showing faith in them.
Sex education: Sex education plays an important part in generation gap because most of the parents do not give sex education to their kids. According to them this is not part of our culture. When parents talk with their children about sex, they can make sure that they are getting the right information. Parents should be a child's first source of information about sex. Understanding correct information can protect children from risky behavior as they grow up. Sex education can prevent the addiction to porn, reduces sexually charged behavior and even prevent their sons from becoming sexual predators.
